Abundant Teichichnus and Planolites burrows occur on upper bedding surfaces, and may represent an Arenicolites-Teichichnus assemblage in the finer sequences.Skolithos linearis (Haldeman, 1840) - vertical burrows in sandstone from the Silurian of Tennessee, USA. (bedding plane view) Trace fossils are any indirect evidence of ancient life. They refer to features in rocks that do not represent parts of the body of a once-living organism. The type species, Skolithos linearis, was first described in 1840 by Samuel S. Haldeman, based on his observations of early Cambrian quartzite at Chickies Rock, a well-known landmark on the east bank of the Susquehanna River, in Pennsylvania. The original description was meager; no illustrations were published, no holotype was established, and ...Computer modeling of trace fossils (Skolithos, Thalassinoides, Planolites, Zoophycos, and Phycosiphon) and ichnofacies (Skolithos, Cruziana, and Zoophycos ichnofacies) is undertaken to assess the ... ….

Jan 4, 2022 · Low number of opportunistic (facies crossing) elements of the Skolithos ichnofacies was observed. The paucity of bioturbation in the HCS sandstone beds in the delta front is most likely a consequence of high frequency and/or high intensity episodic erosional amalgamation and deposition associated with storms. Skolithos linearis, the type species of this iconic ichnogenus, was first described by the distinguished Pennsylvania naturalist, Samuel S. Haldeman. His account appeared in October 1840 as a single paragraph, appended as part of a supplement to a monograph on living freshwater gastropods ( Haldeman, 1840; Fig. 2).On this basis a method is developed for the determination of shear strain from parameters which can be measured in mylonites which contain deformed Skolithos worm burrows. Very large strains are indicated (γ ∼- 10). Some general implications are discussed.

This, along with minor Skolithos and heterolithic bedding, provides strong evidence for shallow marine conditions and favours an interpretation as the deposits of a wave-dominated coast. It also suggests common and extreme storm activity, possibly hurricanes, at what was a mid-latitude (c. 34–40°N) location in the Late Triassic. The muddier FA3 association with ichnogenera (Thalassinoides, Planolites, Palaeophycus, Skolithos and occasional Terebellina (Table 1) are indicative of Cruziana ichnofacies (Pemberton et al., 1992).
