Unless you boost your weapon skill to like 5+ you struggle even with a few proper zombies (with multihit off). Things change a bit if you play with mods like Brita, Antibodies or additional recipes for crafting. Depends on settings. Personally I think it is very balanced for very rare ammo settings.
