The loads listed by IMR for the .45-70 using this powder can be matched by equal weights of Bullseye sometimes and Unique other times. Plenty quick enough for heavy slugs in any event.Another powder that is currently available and gives excellent results is AA2015. 53-54 grs. behind a 400 gr. Speer, Remington (405) or Barnes will deliver 1800+fps and 1 1/2" 100 yd groups.It will serve as a reduced-load powder choice in the aforementioned big-bore cartridges and is an optimum choice in those larger black-powder cartridges, such as the .45-70 Government and the .45-110 and .45-120. It also serves many of the lever-gun cartridges, such as the .30-30 Winchester, .35 Remington, .348 Winchester and .358 Winchester.

Bullet is a Lee 340 gr PB. He is after traditional trapdoor or 1886 power levels. IMR SR4759 and 5744 have a bit lower peak pressure and IMR 4198 even lower still. X-Terminator is a better suited powder. Although suitable loads for the 45-70 could be developed with TAC, it is evident that the two sources I know of chose X-Terminator to develop loads for the 45-70. You learn something new everyday whether you want to or not.In the 16" guns on a battle ship they used a pack of black powder to ignite the packs of smokeless powder that was much slower burning. So black powder was the "kicker" here. In the 45-70 a small load of smokeless pistol powder was used behind the black powder to keep the barrel much cleaner and avoid having to swab the barrel between shots.

Centaur 1. Take a look at the Hodgdon powder burn rate chart and you'll see that H335 falls right in the middle of the range of suggested powders for the 45-70.
